Project Details

GIS-Point collaborated with a specialized seabed mapping company to ensure the accuracy and reliability of their geospatial data. The project involved conducting a thorough analysis of the topological issues present in the data and identifying the optimal solution to address these challenges efficiently. This approach enabled us to correct errors with minimal time expenditure while maintaining high-quality standards.

Client: Environmental consultancy, specializing in marine and offshore projects.

Sector: Marine Geospatial Analysis

Sub Sector: Seabed Mapping

Services:

Solution: Topological Integrity Assurance for Seabed Maps

Location: Spain

Technology and Software: ArcGIS was utilized to perform the topology checks and corrections, ensuring a high level of precision and efficiency in the process.

People: A dedicated team of GIS specialists from GIS-Point worked on this project, including quality controllers and project managers, to ensure the successful completion of the topology validation tasks.

Process & Challenges

Process:
The process began with an in-depth analysis of the seabed mapping data, focusing on detecting and correcting topological errors. We identified the most efficient methods to resolve these issues, ensuring that the solution would minimize time without compromising on accuracy. The standard checks included ensuring that objects do not overlap (“Must Not Overlap”), eliminating any gaps between polygons (“Must Not Have Gaps”), and verifying that polygons did not exceed a specified maximum size (e.g., “Polygons must have a maximum size of 1 square meter”). These steps were executed meticulously using the capabilities of ArcGIS software

Challenges:
The primary challenge was managing the specialized nature of the seabed maps, which required particular attention to the unique characteristics of marine cartography. These high-precision maps demanded a careful approach to topological corrections, ensuring that every adjustment was in line with the strict mapping standards. Additionally, the large volumes of data needed to be processed efficiently to maintain accuracy.

Result

The project successfully improved the topological integrity of the seabed mapping data, resulting in more reliable and accurate maps for the client’s marine applications. This enhancement has significant implications for the safety and efficiency of marine operations relying on these maps.

      Process & Challenges

      Process:
Data analysis: Detailed analysis of lidar data and orthophotos to identify terrain features, infrastructure and other elements to be vectorised.

      Terrain vectorisation:

Horizontals: Create horizontals in 0.5 m increments for detailed mapping of landforms.

Elevations: Placement of elevation marks in 20 m increments on roads and at characteristic terrain points (highest and lowest points). In other areas (forest, meadow, etc.), elevations were placed in 15 m increments.

Linear objects: Vectorisation of ditches, rivers, ravines and other linear terrain features.

Vectorisation of infrastructure objects: Vectorisation of roads, buildings, green spaces and other infrastructure objects based on orthophoto and lidar data.

Quality control: Perform detailed visual and attribute quality control of vectorisation to identify and correct errors.

      Challenges:
Data volume: Large amounts of LiDAR data requiring powerful hardware and efficient processing algorithms.

Detail: High requirements for topographic map detail, requiring careful data analysis and manual revision.

Regulatory framework: The need to comply with Latvian legislation on the creation of topographic maps.

      Result

GisPoint successfully completed a project to create detailed topographic maps at a scale of 1:500 with a total area of 185.55 hectares. The resulting maps comply with Latvian legislation and can be used for: Territory Planning: Development of urban planning documentation, infrastructure design. Engineering Calculations: Design of roads, bridges, engineering networks. Cadastre: Registration of land plots, determination of property boundaries. Other Purposes: Scientific research, monitoring changes in the terrain, etc.
