Project Details

GIS-Point collaborated with a specialized seabed mapping company to ensure the accuracy and reliability of their geospatial data. The project involved conducting a thorough analysis of the topological issues present in the data and identifying the optimal solution to address these challenges efficiently. This approach enabled us to correct errors with minimal time expenditure while maintaining high-quality standards.

Client: Environmental consultancy, specializing in marine and offshore projects.

Sector: Marine Geospatial Analysis

Sub Sector: Seabed Mapping

Services:

Solution: Topological Integrity Assurance for Seabed Maps

Location: Spain

Technology and Software: ArcGIS was utilized to perform the topology checks and corrections, ensuring a high level of precision and efficiency in the process.

People: A dedicated team of GIS specialists from GIS-Point worked on this project, including quality controllers and project managers, to ensure the successful completion of the topology validation tasks.

Process & Challenges

Process:
The process began with an in-depth analysis of the seabed mapping data, focusing on detecting and correcting topological errors. We identified the most efficient methods to resolve these issues, ensuring that the solution would minimize time without compromising on accuracy. The standard checks included ensuring that objects do not overlap (“Must Not Overlap”), eliminating any gaps between polygons (“Must Not Have Gaps”), and verifying that polygons did not exceed a specified maximum size (e.g., “Polygons must have a maximum size of 1 square meter”). These steps were executed meticulously using the capabilities of ArcGIS software

Challenges:
The primary challenge was managing the specialized nature of the seabed maps, which required particular attention to the unique characteristics of marine cartography. These high-precision maps demanded a careful approach to topological corrections, ensuring that every adjustment was in line with the strict mapping standards. Additionally, the large volumes of data needed to be processed efficiently to maintain accuracy.

Result

The project successfully improved the topological integrity of the seabed mapping data, resulting in more reliable and accurate maps for the client’s marine applications. This enhancement has significant implications for the safety and efficiency of marine operations relying on these maps.

Navigating Our Impressive GIS Portfolio

  • GIS Analysis for Determining Optimal Locations for Wind Farms

    Location:

    Australia

As part of the project, we developed KML files to depict various constraints within the study area. Moreover, we produced wind speed images using data from the global wind atlas.
