Seabed maps are a specialised form of marine cartography, and their characteristics drove the work. These are high-precision maps, so every topological correction had to sit inside the mapping standards. The data volumes were large enough that throughput mattered as much as accuracy.

Work started with an analysis of the seabed mapping data to find the topological errors. We picked the methods that would resolve them in the least time without giving up accuracy. The standard checks covered objects not overlapping (“Must Not Overlap”), no gaps between polygons (“Must Not Have Gaps”), and polygons not exceeding a set maximum size (for example, “Polygons must have a maximum size of 1 square meter”). These ran in ArcGIS.
The topological integrity of the seabed mapping data improved, and the client’s marine applications now run on more reliable maps. That carries through to the safety of marine operations that depend on them.
